UNI SNOW GAMES 2009 – DAY TWO August 31, 2009

Gravity Cross and Brilliant Sunshine!
After the closure of Cardrona yesterday due to atrocious weather, awakening to brilliant sunshine for Day Two of the Games created huge relief! And it didn’t falter, providing a fantastic day of competition for the competitors and spectators alike.
The Cardrona Gravity Cross course was used for the Skier and Boarder Cross today. This is the feature event for the University Snow Games with 130 students competing. This course was an FIS level course with some fast flowing features down the mountain. Straight out of the start the competitors approached a Wu Tang feature, (this sorted out the men from the boys). The rest of the course included sweepers, rollers, burms and jumps, all providing for some exciting heats.
The finals provided thrilling racing with some of the finalists having raced in the recent Winter Games Boarder Cross. Racers were familiar with the course’s difficult features by the final run and gaining front position was important at the first turn.
Cody Logan and Phil Dominick came up against Michael Kibblewhite and Carl van der Boom in the Male Boarder Cross final, with Logan crossing the line in first place.
It was the Australians who shone through in the Women’s events with Melbourne University student, Whitney Campbell, taking out the Boarder Cross final, beating strong competitors in Claire Nash, Georgina Allen and Estelle Baker. And fellow Melbourne Uni student, Katya Crema, also had a tough ask in the Skier Cross final, taking the title over Caitlin Feasey, Adiella White and Toni-Rose Brookes.
The 2009 Male Skier Cross title went to Andrew Greig from Otago University, with Tom Johanson and Grant Melhop coming in second and third.
All in all, an awesome day’s racing with some great thrills and spills!

Weather Causes Cancellation (30 August) August 30, 2009
Posted by universitysportnz in News update, Photos.add a comment
For the first time in Uni Snow Games history weather has forced the cancellation of the first day of competition.
Strong wind conditions eventually forced the closure of the whole Cardrona Resort despite the venues initial optimism of being able to go ahead.
University Sport New Zealand (USNZ) will work with the venue and consider programme options over the next few days. It is hoped that the Camp Counsellors USA – Giant Slalom event will be rescheduled for later in the week.
Team Managers will be contacted tonight with an update on tomorrows weather conditions and any programme changes. The Uni Snow Games hotline message will also be updated as more information becomes available (021 870 212)
